A Case of Caudal Anesthesia for ESWL in a Child

Abstract
In the course of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), anesthesia is required for two reasons: the procedure may be painful, and the patient must remain still during the procedure so that the target stone is kept in the focal point of shock waves. Both general and regional anesthesia are being used for ESWL, and the current trend is that continuous epidural anesthesia and general anesthesia with high frequency ventilation (HFV) are preferred over the other anesthetic methods.
Recently, we experienced a regional anesthesia with 1% lidocaine caudal epidural block and sedation with diazepam in one year and six months old male patient who had ESWL treatment for the right lower ureteral stone. The result was evaluated as to be successful and satisfactory.
We considered that, in appropriately selected patients, caudal epidural anesthesia combined with sedation may be acceptable anesthesia for uncooperative patients undergoing ESWL, particularly in children.
